Linux Challenge 2025

Let us see how long I can last before quitting

I have always been an avid Microsoft believer, but with the direction that Microsoft are taking with choices within the OS I am leaning further towards Linux. I have used Linux on and off and my colleagues can attest to the number of times I have OS swapped.

The challenge is moving my workload over to Linux. This will only be done on my personal devices; my work devices are out of scope for this challenge. My workload is primarily web browsing, photo editing and gaming. So, it should be easy to achieve right?

Linus Tech Tips did a similar challenge where they used Linux for a month, I am going to challenge myself for a year. They met some difficulties when they tried it, but I will hopefully overcome them.

I am going to be posting about how to install, how I install applications, backups and setting up for productivity and gaming.

Distribution Choice

For this challenge, I have chosen Ubuntu 24.10 the latest non-LTS release available. Not for any reason, other than living on the edge. I went with a minimal installation and then added Déjà Dup, Google Chrome, LibreOffice and Flatpak. The minimal installation comes with Firefox, Thunderbird, and a small selection of utilities.

It is a Gnome based distribution running version 47 of Gnome Desktop Environment. My first experience has been positive due to my earlier use of Ubuntu and Fedora which use Gnome as the default Desktop Environment.

What’s Next?

I’m going to be writing and releasing a series of posts over the course of the year on how I setup my devices and how to configure the applications I use. This is my first real blog series, so if I have got anything wrong feel free to message me on BlueSky @AndrewBakerUK
